A national crime network known as the “Felony Lane Gang” is working Southeast Michigan including Ann Arbor, targeting women who leave purses in cars and stealing from their bank accounts.
The gang’s M.O. sticks out: targeting women who leave their vehicles at gyms, fitness centers or sporting events. The gang keeps parking lots under surveillance then smashes the window if needed, to take purses or wallets left behind. They immediately try to cash any checks they find, heading to drive-through banks and using the farthest lane from the teller to avoid detection.
That last-lane trick is how the gang got their name due to more difficult visibility of the driver or other passengers in the car. The gang may also try to match the looks of the perpetrator to the stolen identity using wigs, makeup, masks etc…
Analysts and law enforcement tracking the Felony Lane Gang say the technique has spread north from South Florida in the past 10 years.
Ladies help protect yourself by not leaving your purse in the car when heading into the gym or to the soccer game. Be aware of your surroundings.
